The 5LS182 is a logic scanner card produced by B&R Automation in the 5LS Logic Scanner Cards series. As a PCI expansion board, it embeds real-time fieldbus connectivity into industrial PCs and controllers, translating network events into deterministic logic updates on the local backplane. By handling POWERLINK traffic at the card level, the board offloads the host CPU and provides synchronized data exchange for distributed I/O and motion axes. This arrangement helps the host system maintain predictable communication timing during fast machine cycles.
Two shielded Ethernet PHYs implement the card’s POWERLINK (V1/V2) interface at a 100 Mbit/s transfer rate. Auto-MDI/MDIX removes crossover-cable constraints, and autonegotiation sets duplex and speed with the attached switch. Within the network, the module can operate in managing or controlled node mode. The physical segment can extend to 100 m per link when standard Category-5e cable is used. Local processing is supported by 1 MB of SRAM that buffers process data between the bus and the host. Electrical load on the backplane stays low because the board draws only 2 W. Environmental exposure is limited by an IP20 housing, so the card must be mounted inside a cabinet.
For physical connection, the card offers two shielded RJ45 sockets on its bracket, matching the daisy-chain topology commonly used in machine networks. The printed circuit board follows the PCI Half-Size format, permitting installation in compact industrial PCs without riser modifications. An onboard lithium button cell rated at 950 mAh delivers backup power at 3 V, retaining configuration data when the host is off. Diagnostics can be forwarded to external circuits through a ready relay that provides both NO and NC contacts and switches up to 30 VDC. The lithium button cell chemistry supports long standby life while preserving stored settings during power loss.
