Wake Industrial LLC is not an authorized distributor of this product.
The B & R Automation 5LS172.4 is an ISA half size module from the 5LS Logic Scanner Cards series. It supports two CAN interfaces via the SJA 1000 controller, with a maximum baud rate of 500 kBit/s and a maximum distance of 1,000 meters. The card operates with a continuous current of 10 Amps, includes jumper configurable bus termination, and has both normally open and normally closed relay contacts.
Internal Product Review
The 5LS172.4 is a B & R Automation logic scanner card built as an ISA half size module with an ISA Plug & Play bus standard. Dual CAN interfaces and interface isolation support clean integration in machine control networks. A maximum baud rate of 500 kBit/s makes the card a strong choice for dependable CAN fieldbus communication.

Product Description:
The 5LS172.4 logic scanner card is manufactured by B&R Automation for the 5LS Logic Scanner Cards series. Mounted in an industrial PC, the board connects the host controller to a CAN fieldbus so that distributed drives, sensors, and I/O nodes can be addressed through common message frames. By occupying a half-length ISA expansion slot, the card adds deterministic network capability to compact control computers without external gateways, supporting time-critical automation tasks such as coordinated motion and process interlocking.
The board follows the ISA Plug & Play bus standard, allowing the BIOS to assign IRQ and I/O ranges automatically. An SJA 1000 CAN controller handles message filtering, error counting, and arbitration inside the card. The card provides 2 independent CAN channels, allowing redundant or segmented networks to operate from one slot. Each channel supports bit rates up to 500 kBit/s. With suitable cabling and a lower configured data rate, the network distance can reach 1,000 m before repeaters are required. Optocouplers isolate the interfaces, while additional PC isolation helps prevent ground loops between the backplane and field wiring. Jumper-configurable bus termination allows 120 Ω resistors to be inserted or removed directly on the card. The half-size ISA form factor fits compact industrial computers while preserving access to adjacent expansion slots.
Field wiring terminates on a 2 × 4-pin multipoint connector that serves both CAN channels and the ready relay. The relay can switch DC control circuits up to 30 VDC and carry a continuous load of 10 A, allowing direct actuation of enable lines or alarm lamps. During operation, the electronics draw only 2.3 W, which keeps the thermal load low in densely populated control systems and reduces the need for additional cooling around the expansion card.
