5LS172.4 is a B&R Automation logic scanner module. It features dual CAN bus connections. An object buffer is available for transmitted and received data on the CAN bus. This module fits into a PCI slot on a computer with PCI expansion slots. The format of the module is half-size PCI. Both of the communication interfaces are isolated. Physical connector for the CAN bus interfaces is a 4-pin multipoint connector. The maximum distance over which CAN bus can operate is 1000 meters. Data can be transmitted over the CAN bus at a rate not exceeding 500 kbps. B&R’s Automation Studio software version 3 and above can be used to configured the unit as a CAN bus master node. When properly installed inside a PC, the protection class of the 5LS172.4 module is IP20. Condensation is not permitted and the upper and lower limits for relative humidity are 5 and 95%.
Ideal module operation is possible when the ambient temperature stays within 0 and 55 degrees Celsius. Unused units must be kept in storage when the ambient temperature is maintained between -25 and 70 degrees Celsius. A lithium battery is included with terminal blocks that must be added as separate items. Compatible PCs for the logic scanner include panel PCs and Automation PCs from B&R and desktop PCs. The 5LS172.4 module draws 2.4 Watts from the PC where it is installed. Electrical isolation is available between the communication interfaces, and between the PCs and the CAN bus interfaces. Certifications for the module include CE and UL. Capacity of the battery-backed SRAM installed on the module is 256 kB. Professional handling is important for ensuring proper module operation.
