Product Description:

The 5LS172 logic scanner card is manufactured by B&R Automation and belongs to the 5LS Logic Scanner Cards series. Designed for rack-mounted controllers, the board expands the host CPU with dual CAN segments so distributed sensors, drives, and motion modules can be polled in real time. It translates parallel backplane data into serial frames on the fieldbus, allowing deterministic exchange of process variables in industrial automation cells. The module acts as a communication gateway that passes locally captured machine states to higher-level control layers.

The card presents 2 x CAN interfaces that share a common backplane DMA channel yet operate independently on the network side. A discrete termination plug selects the required bus state because termination is jumper configurable, allowing the card to be installed at different points along the trunk. Frames are processed by the SJA 1000 stand-alone controller, which supports both standard and extended identifiers. With a maximum rate of 500 kBit/s, the interface covers typical drive-control traffic, and signal integrity can be maintained over cable runs up to 1,000 m when wiring rules are followed. Each port uses a 2 x 4-pin multipoint connector that simplifies daisy-chaining inside compact panels.

Electrical safety and signaling functions are integrated. Galvanic separation is provided by interface isolation for both CAN trunks and by PC isolation toward the backplane, limiting ground loops between remote machinery and the controller. The module can participate as an active node that detects bus faults and reports status through a ready relay. That relay uses a 4-pin multipoint header and offers changeover contacts rated for 10 A at up to 30 VDC to drive indicator lamps or interlock coils. Because the host energizes the relay only after the module completes its self-test, the control system receives a clear hardware-ready signal before motion starts.
