The 5LS071.9 logic scanner card is produced by B&R Automation and belongs to the 5LS Logic Scanner Cards series. It is installed in a controller chassis to integrate field networks into the CPU task cycle. By combining a dedicated Controller Area Network bus channel with a separate RS-232 interface, the module provides a simple way to connect drives, sensors, and operator panels. This arrangement supports both deterministic real-time traffic and conventional ASCII streams used for setup or maintenance tasks.
Its CAN section is based on the Intel 82527 controller, which manages message filtering, error tracking, and retransmission independently of the host CPU. Field wiring uses a shielded 4-wire twisted pair and terminates on a board-mounted 4-pin connection block, simplifying installation in multi-drop layouts. The transceiver is galvanically isolated, protecting the backplane from external faults and common-mode noise. Programmable bit timing permits data rates up to 500 kBit/sec, and multi-master arbitration allows as many as 64 nodes to coexist on a single segment without sacrificing bus latency.
The second channel is an asynchronous serial link that ends at a 9-pin D-type (M) connector. An on-board ST16C650 UART supplies a hardware buffer of 32 bytes, minimizing interrupt load when high-frequency transactions occur. RTS and CTS lines provide hardware handshaking, though the port is not isolated and should remain inside the same protective earth zone. Selectable speeds range from 300 baud to 115.2 kBaud, covering typical console and modem rates. While this link handles configuration data, the CAN side follows the CiA/CAL specification, giving the application standardized object addressing and service-layer functions that work with the broader B&R Automation control environment.
