Product Description:
The 5LS050.66-1 is a logic scanner add-on module from B&R Automation and belongs to the 5LS Logic Scanner Cards series. It is installed on a host PLC rack to supervise cyclic data exchange across a Profibus network while offering a separate diagnostic link for service laptops or plant HMIs. Within an automation cell, the card handles polling, status signaling, and fault localization so the main controller can focus on user program execution.
The service side of the module is built around a diagnostic interface that communicates at 9600 bit/s through a 9-pin D-Sub plug. This link uses one RS-232 interface and references the same ground as the controller backplane because diagnostic isolation is not provided. An internal dual-port memory of 8 KB buffers telegrams for host access, allowing maintenance software to inspect traffic without halting field operations. Four front-panel LEDs marked RUN / RDY / ERR / STA indicate the operating state. The module draws 4.25 W from the rack’s 5 V rail, and the resulting heat dissipates through convection slots in the card housing.
Process communication uses one RS-485 fieldbus port behind a 9-pin D-Sub socket, and galvanic isolation on this channel protects the logic circuits from common-mode transients. Acting as a Profibus DP master, the card can address up to 3.5 KB of input data and an equally sized block of output data during each scan while managing as many as 125 subordinate devices. Deterministic token passing on the Profibus segment is coordinated in hardware, so the PLC only needs to read and write the shared memory window. Fieldbus isolation prevents communication noise from reaching sensitive backplane signals. This separation supports stable network timing when the installation includes long cable runs or multiple power domains.
