B & R Automation manufactures the 5C5000.02, a controller base module in the 5CS Provit Controller System Units series. The unit accepts logic, communication, and motion cards and distributes backplane power to them, allowing a machine builder to assemble a tailored CPU and I/O stack. Within an enclosure, it serves as the central platform for coordinating sequences, collecting diagnostics, and forwarding real-time signals to higher-level networks in an industrial automation line. This layout supports mixed control tasks on one base module without requiring separate carrier hardware.

The backplane offers 2 total slots: one fixed B&R ISA position and one hybrid ISA/PCI connector. The hybrid site routes conventional interrupts while presenting a 32-bit data path to high-bandwidth PCI boards, and the dedicated ISA lane retains its original 16-bit width for legacy interfaces. Timing across the PCI segment is locked to a 33 MHz reference clock, so message latency remains predictable. Address decoding supports exactly 1 ISA/PCI combination slot, keeping resource mapping unambiguous to the operating system during board initialization. An IDE mass-memory header is provided for disk or CompactFlash storage, and the 5 V plane specified for PCI cards is sourced locally from the unit’s power section, minimizing external wiring.

Input power to the chassis is 24 VDC, delivered through a 5-pin D-sub connector and limited to 60 W of internal load. Should that supply dip, the hold-up network maintains the 12 V rail for 1 ms and the 5 V rail for 1.5 ms, allowing processors to finish critical cycles. A reverse-polarity circuit based on diode protection prevents damage when wiring is crossed. Cooling is provided by a ball-bearing fan whose speed is trimmed by an analog regulator, reducing acoustic noise while respecting the 5 V PCI limit. The regulated fan control also helps reduce unnecessary airflow during lighter operating conditions.
