B & R Automation manufactures the 5C2000.05 controller as part of the 5C2 Compact Processors series. The device is used as the main CPU in automated machinery, where it executes motion sequences, records process data, and exchanges information with fieldbus nodes. By combining processing, memory, removable storage, and multiple communication interfaces in one compact housing, it reduces panel space and wiring effort in industrial control cabinets. This arrangement allows the controller to handle local control tasks and communications without requiring separate processor and interface modules.
The computing core is an 80486SXLC2-50 processor that runs user tasks while conserving power through clock-doubling technology. Working memory includes 8 MB of DRAM for dynamic variables, along with 256 kB of battery-backed SRAM that retains setpoints during power loss. A front-mounted floppy drive accepts 3.5-inch, 1.44 MB disks, providing a simple way to transfer programs or recipes. Control electronics draw from a 24 VDC supply with a ±6 V tolerance, allowing operation from standard cabinet power buses. Four serial channels, each equipped with 16-byte FIFOs and two galvanically isolated lines, support RS232, RS232/TTY, RS485/TTY, and RS232/RS422 signaling options. A single parallel port supports printer or diagnostic connections, and the battery-backed real-time clock keeps time stamps active through outages.
The integrated CAN bus is electrically isolated, which helps prevent ground loops when the unit is connected to distributed I/O racks. Thermal operation is permitted from 0 to 45 °C, and a temperature-controlled fan adjusts airflow to keep internal components within that range during continuous duty. Installation is permitted up to 3000 m above sea level without derating, which supports use in high-altitude facilities.
