The 5AC600.DVDS-00 optical drive is an add-on built by B & R Automation for the 5AC CNC Addon Modules series. Slotted into a controller chassis, this DVD-ROM/CD-RW module gives a machining center convenient local media access for loading G-code files, saving diagnostic logs, and installing control firmware without a network connection. Slide-in mounting lets the drive be replaced from the front panel without disturbing neighboring I/O cards.

The unit connects through a IDE (ATAPI) bus, so it can be addressed by standard PC-compatible chipsets inside the CNC. A data buffer of 2 MB smooths bursty transfers, while peak sustained throughput reaches 33.3 MB/s, matching the upper limit of the Ultra DMA mode supported by many embedded PCs. Compact disc reading occurs at 24x speed, and DVD media are processed at 8x, so large part programs are retrieved quickly relative to spindle start sequences. Typical seek operations finish in 85 ms for CDs and 110 ms for DVDs, keeping load times predictable for automation tasks that schedule tool changes around data calls. After power-up, the first disc is available within 19 s, allowing the control to reach automatic mode during the normal hydraulic and axis-home routine.

The disc hub turns at 5136 rpm ±1%, a speed that balances access latency with vibration limits in vertically mounted drives. A Class 1 Laser assembly confines emitted radiation below the threshold that would require additional guarding, which simplifies integration inside sealed electrical cabinets. The enclosure weighs only 283 g, so it does not add significant mass to swinging cabinet doors. Write functionality covers CD-R at 24x, 16x, 10x, or 4x and CD-RW at 10x or 4x, giving operators flexible archival options when logging cycle counters or machine parameter sets.
