The 5AC600.485I-00 is a serial communication expansion board produced by B&R Automation for controllers in the 5AC CNC Addon Modules series. The board is inserted in a spare slot of a PC-based CNC system and supplies an additional asynchronous channel so that machine tools can interface with handheld terminals, sensors, or field service laptops. Within an automation cabinet, it removes the need for external converters, allowing the central processor to supervise ancillary equipment through direct software access.
The communication line leaves the module through a 9-pin male D-sub connector, a common plug format that simplifies cable assembly. On system boot, the hardware maps itself to the I/O address 2E8h, keeping it clear of COM1 and COM2 ranges and reducing address conflicts. Hardware interrupts are issued on IRQ10, which lets the processor service incoming characters with minimal latency even when other high-priority tasks run. A receive-and-transmit FIFO depth of 16 bytes lowers the frequency of interrupt requests by grouping characters, which is useful when long parameter strings are exchanged during program downloads.
