It combines magnetic, optical, and floppy media in a single cartridge so PC-based controllers can store boot files, software images, and line-side data logs without external drives. Within an automation rack, the unit operates as an IDE/ATAPI slave and provides removable media access for loading updates, archiving records, and moving small files between systems.
Primary hard-disk access is governed by a seek time of 110 ms, and sustained transfers average 3.7 MB/s. A separate 2 MB buffer helps smooth read bursts between the spindle and the system bus, while the magnetic platter rotates at 5,140 rpm. The IDE / ATAPI (UDMA33) interface supports burst cycles up to 33 MB/s, so the mechanical storage section remains the main limit on hard-disk throughput. Optical media support is provided by a CD-RW drive that records or rewrites at 4× and reads pressed discs at 24×, which corresponds to a peak transfer rate of 3.6 MB/s for CD playback.
