The 5A5600.03 storage unit is produced by B&R Automation as part of the 5A5 Hard Disks series. It serves as a removable data medium for PLC and HMI controllers, providing nonvolatile memory for software updates, machine recipes, and log files. In an automation cabinet, the module supports portable data handling without changing the surrounding control layout. The removable format also allows stored files to be transferred between compatible control systems when archived data or updated process files are needed. Its mechanical design follows standard computer drive conventions, which helps it fit common industrial enclosures.

Connection to the controller backplane is made through a 25-pin DSUB interface that carries both power and data lines. The unit uses the 3.5 in form factor, so it fits common brackets and shock-isolated trays used in industrial housings. During operation, it can work in ambient temperatures up to 51.7 °C and relative humidity up to 80% RH, making it suitable for enclosed cabinets near heat-generating equipment.
