The 5A501001 is an industrial hard disk module produced by B&R Automation as part of the 5A5 Hard Disks series. Designed for use inside an automation PC environment, the device provides non-volatile storage to record recipes, log data, and host the operating system for machine control applications. When installed in a panel-mounted IPC, it allows the controller to retain critical information during power cycles and enables quick software loading during startup in production lines. This type of storage is suited to applications where machine data must remain available after shutdown and be read again when power is restored.
Integration flexibility centers on its compatibility with the Provit 5000/5600 operator panels. Matched mechanical dimensions and system recognition allow the storage module to fit these panel platforms without additional setup. Visual output from these panels routes through the dedicated Flat Panel Display connector, so the disk housing reserves space for that pass-through. Connection to the host system is handled by the factory-supplied IPC - Local Unit cable, which carries both SATA signals and status lines between the drive and the motherboard. Power enters through the keyed 24 VDC IN socket, reducing wiring errors and aligning with the 24-volt control cabinet standard. Remote diagnostics and data duplication can be performed over the galvanically isolated GS Link interface, allowing data sets to be mirrored between machines.
For additional maintenance access, the disk enclosure exposes a standard-pitch COM port that supports ASCII commands for SMART monitoring and low-level service functions. The nominal supply is regulated at 24 V DC, so the spindle and electronics share the same power rail as sensors and relays within the cabinet. This module acts as a Local Unit, meaning it remains mounted beside the IPC rather than at a distant terminal, which lowers latency during high-volume data capture. Its local mounting position also shortens the internal connection path between the storage device and the control computer.
