Product Description:
The 5A5009.02 optical storage unit is produced by B & R Automation for the 5A5 Hard Disks series. Despite the series title, this model functions as a CD-RW add-on drive that fits into modular control PCs and machine-mounted HMI stations. Within an automation cabinet it provides removable media for firmware distribution, recipe archiving, and data logging without network dependence. That role allows maintenance teams to move files between field devices and engineering stations securely.
The drive communicates through the IDE / ATAPI (UDMA33) interface, so 5C5000.2x or 5C5000.3x bus units can map it as a secondary channel. A seek finishes in 110 ms, adequate for sequential recipe retrieval. Reads reach 24x, and blank discs accept write rates of 16x, 10x, or 4x so technicians can match media quality. Re-writable media attains 10x during erase-write cycles, limiting disc heat. Ricoh Just Link coordinates with a 2 MB cache to pause the laser when upstream data stalls, preventing coaster creation.
During continuous streaming the optical subsystem reaches a maximum data throughput of 3.6 MB/s, which aligns with the UDMA33 timing budget of the host bus. The mechanical section spins at 5,140 rpm, a moderate rate that limits vibration when the unit is mounted on a card frame inside a moving machine panel. Laser modulation and spindle control draw up to 5.5 W while writing, but power falls to 0.25 W in standby so the module meets tight cabinet thermal limits. A dedicated 2 MB buffer absorbs short traffic gaps from the PLC, allowing Ricoh Just Link to resume burning at the correct sector without data loss. Together, these figures show that the drive can handle periodic file transfers and firmware updates without excessive current demand or acoustic noise.
