The 5A5001.05 is a hard disk drive developed by B & R Automation within the 5A5 Hard Disks series. This 2.5-inch storage module provides nonvolatile memory for program code, diagnostics, and process data in industrial controllers. By integrating directly into B & R Automation PCs and PLCs, the drive maintains local data retention even during brief line interruptions.
The drive offers a formatted capacity of 6 GB, divided into 11,733,120 user-addressable sectors, each exactly 512 bytes. Data recently requested by the controller is stored in a 512 KB on-board cache to shorten mechanical latency. Sustained media rotation is governed by a spindle at 4,200 rpm ±1%; this speed, combined with an average bit density of 383 kbpi and two read/write heads, determines internal throughput. When data leaves the platter, the electronics pass it to the backplane at up to 66.6 MB/s via ATA multi-word and Ultra-DMA modes. Rubber suspension mounting isolates the chassis from machine vibration during operation, and the drive reaches full speed five seconds after power-up.
During runtime the firmware schedules seeks that average 13 ms from track to track, while a typical access, including rotational latency, completes in 7.14 ms. Precise head positioning is supported by a physical track density of 24,300 TPI, permitting stable reads inside temperature-fluctuating cabinets.
