The 4XP1640.00-K02 keypad module is produced by B & R Automation for the 4XP Keypad Modules series. Designed as an operator panel, it combines tactile membrane keys with a monochrome LCD so machine builders can issue commands and view status without a full PC terminal. Its role in an automation cell is to provide local command entry and graphical feedback while exchanging data with the main controller over the X2X fieldbus.
The supply electronics operate at 24 VDC ±25%, a tolerance band that lets the device remain functional when cabinet power fluctuates. The LCD renders process data at 240 × 128 pixels, and a luminance of 170 cd/m² keeps the screen legible under typical factory lighting. Nineteen membrane switches sit under a sealed overlay, and signals from these covered keys exit through an 8-pin terminal block, simplifying wiring during panel assembly. The front face meets IP65, so dust and low-pressure water jets do not impair operation. Rear surfaces carry an IP20 rating, which is adequate once the unit is recessed into an enclosure. Communication with the controller is handled through an X2X slave connection, so only a twisted-pair network cable is required to transmit data and timing references.
The enclosure spans 212 mm in width and 170 mm in height, yet it projects only 42 mm behind the door, allowing it to fit inside shallow control boxes. At 1.3 kg, the module adds little load to swing-arm or pendant mounts. The permitted station distance on the X2X line reaches 100 m, allowing placement far from the main PLC without repeaters. Installation requires a rectangular panel aperture and rear fasteners that secure the module within the enclosure. The shallow rear projection leaves room for nearby wiring ducts and other panel-mounted components.
