B&R Automation manufactures the 4PP045.IF24-1, an operator interface in the 4PP Power Panels series that combines visualization, control, and communication functions for machine-level automation. The panel supplies three built-in serial channels identified as If1, If2, and If3. These channels let it link PLCs, drives, and higher-level networks without additional gateway hardware. That arrangement allows local operator input and external device communication to occur in the same unit.
If1 is configured for a maximum data rate of 115.2 kBit/s and uses the RS232 electrical standard, which suits point-to-point connections in short, low-noise cabinet wiring. Both If1 and If2 use a 9-pin DSUB connector, so the same cable style can be used on either port during installation. If2 extends communication beyond the cabinet; its reach of 500 m comes from differential signaling on the RS485/RS422 physical layer, allowing remote I/O stations or inverter groups to be placed across the factory floor while maintaining the same throughput. These two channels can exchange parameter sets, diagnostic words, or recipe data with legacy serial devices while the internal CPU handles visualization tasks in parallel.
The third interface uses a 9-pin DSUB socket and operates as a Profibus DP Slave. Over distances up to 1000 m, it supports cyclic data exchange at a peak bus speed of 12 MBit/s, allowing the panel to appear as a field device on an existing Profibus line without slowing the master scan cycle. Its electrical characteristics follow the RS485 standard, so shielded two-wire cabling and bus-end termination are required. This layout is useful when the panel must exchange cyclic process data with a larger automation network while still serving as the local display. The connectors are housed in an IP20 enclosure, which limits installation to control enclosures while allowing heat dissipation and helping protect internal boards from accidental contact.
