Beckhoff Company manufactures the CX8091 embedded PC which falls under the CX series. It features a weight of approximately 180g, IP 20 protection class, and measures 64mm (W) x 100mm (H) x 73mm (D). Its shock resistance conforms to EN 60068-2-27 while the EMC immunity conforms to EN 61000-6-2. Some of its markings and approvals include UL, CE, ATEX, and others. It comes with web-based management, online change, web visualization, and down/upload code. Interfaces that come with the CX8091 include USB, fieldbus interface, and one RJ45 interface. The CX8091 comes with a switched Ethernet port and supports OPC UA and BACnet protocols. This embedded PC automatically detects the E/K-bus terminals during start-up phase. The TwinCAT 2 runtime environment is used to program the CX8091 via the fieldbus or other Ethernet interfaces. The BACnet protocol is designed for building automation. Applications include fire alarm technology, lighting control, and HVAC. The TwinCAT provides the OPC UA protocol functionality. It should be installed on a DIN rail in a terminal box. Since the ventilations are located at the top and bottom of the housing, a clearance of 30mm should be left above and below the control system. This is in a bid to ensure optimum air flow.

The CX8091 is ideal for processing of PLC programs or as a slave device for higher-level fieldbus systems. This Beckhoff PC eliminates the need for EtherCAT terminals since it is programmable can run its own control program. When the EtherCAT (E-bus) terminal is used, it provides further options such as integration of bus systems such as PROFINET, CANopen, and PROFIBUS.
