The RP-001 is an absolute position encoder produced by Sanyo Denki within the High Accuracy Absolute Encoders series. It converts shaft rotation into digital position data for motion controllers, allowing machine tools and semiconductor stages to determine their axis locations without homing during every operating cycle. The device combines an optical sensing disk with onboard signal processing, so the controller receives immediate, nonvolatile position feedback even after a power loss.
The encoder supports automatic loop tuning with three automatic tuning levels; each level adjusts up to four internal gain factors drawn from the unit’s four automatic tuning parameters. It can operate in five operation modes, ranging from high-speed capture to fine-resolution positioning. During diagnostics, the front panel shows three display fields, while up to 16 monitor pages can be viewed through a service tool for deeper analysis. Real-time signals leave the board through two monitor outputs, allowing an oscilloscope to display velocity or error values without disturbing the control bus. For every output cycle, the encoder can supply 17 data types, such as absolute angle, multi-turn count, alarm flags, and checksum, giving drives sufficient data for closed-loop interpolation. A dedicated servomotor jog function allows the axis to be rotated slowly from the encoder keypad when the drive is disabled. Six labeled test points—DM1, DM2, SG, M1, M2, and VCMD—provide direct analog access to internal signals.
Historical operating data are stored in an alarm log that retains eight entries with time stamps for efficient fault tracking. When the encoder is configured, users can browse nine parameter selection items and write adjustments into four parameter setting items for permanent retention. Drive integration is simplified because the signal protocol is matched to PU, PZ, PE, and PV amplifiers, eliminating the need for custom wiring or changes to the communication software. The jog feature provides controlled low-speed movement during setup or diagnostic work without requiring external controls.
