Stepper drives play an important role in controlling how the stepper motor operates. These are generally used for excitation modes for the stepper motor, half step, full step and also microstepping. These specific excitation modes have a role in the running properties and are also known to torque the motor delivers.

How does it work?

A stepper motor works by converting electronic signals. These signals are converted to mechanical movement every time there is an incoming pulse application to motor. The pulse functions to move the shaft in a systematic way and in fixed increments. Usually there are two kinds of modes – full step excitation modes. In one step, the motor operates with just on phase energized. In this mode minimum power is needed and is the least power user. In the second phase, the motor operates with both the phases energized and at same time. This is considered to be an efficient mode as it leads to improvement speed performance and torque. However, such an improvement comes with increased power consumption too.
