The VACIV-D6 is a spindle drive unit produced by Okuma for the VAC Spindle Drives series. It supplies regulated power to machine-tool spindle motors, allowing programmable speed and torque control during cutting, drilling, and finishing cycles in automated machining centers. By converting incoming line energy into the voltage and frequency required by the paired spindle motor, the drive forms the electrical interface between numerical control commands and mechanical spindle motion.
An internal protection circuit uses a 0.5 A auxiliary fuse on the control board and a separate 5.0 A main fuse on the power path. These fuses open their respective circuits when current exceeds safe limits, helping prevent damage to internal components. Power switching is handled by two IGBT modules, giving the inverter the high-frequency switching capability necessary for smooth motor commutation. Energy storage and filtering are provided by three capacitors, while harmonic suppression on the DC link relies on three choke coils. Rectification of the three-phase input is consolidated in one diode module, which keeps the rectifier assembly compact. Forced-air cooling is supported by a single heat-sink fan that directs airflow across the semiconductor and passive devices to maintain acceptable operating temperatures.
The drive supports multiple motor combinations, with the largest rated at 7.5/5.5 kW for 30-minute and continuous duty, respectively. A steel chassis weighing 13 kg houses the electronics, and the enclosure has a height of 450 mm. This height allows the unit to fit standard control cabinets while leaving room for cable bends above and below the enclosure. The chassis is 170 mm wide and 283 mm deep, providing a narrow profile for installation beside other control equipment. Its through-hole pattern measures 150 mm by 414 mm and accepts four M6 bolts in a 4-M6 mounting arrangement. The mounting points distribute the chassis load across the cabinet panel and hold the drive securely during machine operation.
