The VACIII D-22 spindle drive is produced by Okuma within the VAC Spindle Drives series. It is intended for CNC machine tools where precise spindle speed control is required to maintain surface finish and dimensional accuracy during cutting, drilling, or grinding cycles. Acting as the bridge between the mains supply and the spindle motor, the drive processes command signals from the numerical controller and regulates output frequency and voltage. This control allows the spindle to respond quickly to programmed speed commands and changing mechanical loads. Its integrated design supports applications that require stable rotation throughout demanding machining cycles.
An onboard diagnostic system announces faults using the AL + Alarm No. code structure, allowing operating faults such as overcurrent or overheating to be identified without separate diagnostic equipment. Each message appears on a seven-segment LED panel that remains legible under typical cabinet lighting. For noise-resistant signal exchange with the CNC, the drive uses an optical interface that resists the electrical interference common in high-power enclosures. The incoming mains supply can operate at 50/60 Hz, allowing the drive to work with either supported power frequency. Internal power devices are attached to a finned heat sink cooled by a heat sink fan. This forced-air path removes heat from the power section during continuous high-speed operation and helps prevent excessive semiconductor temperatures.
The internal hardware is supplied as a single control PCB and power unit assembly, which reduces the number of separate electrical connections required inside the cabinet. Combining the control electronics and power stage also creates a compact arrangement for installation in CNC equipment. The configuration includes no resolver support or independent fan motor, making it suitable for systems that use external feedback devices and cabinet-based ventilation. The absence of an independent auxiliary fan motor does not eliminate the dedicated fan used to cool the power-stage heat sink. Signal processing remains integrated with the power electronics so spindle commands can be converted into controlled motor output without an additional internal control module. The mounting arrangement is intended for installation within compatible VAC drive cabinets used in multi-spindle machining centers.
