The VAC2-D45-A is a spindle drive module produced by Okuma as part of the VAC Spindle Drives series. Designed for high-speed machining centers, the unit converts incoming three-phase supply power into controlled variable-frequency output so that a spindle motor can accelerate, decelerate, and hold commanded speeds during cutting operations. By combining power conversion hardware with internal command and feedback processing, the drive provides the closed-loop torque regulation needed for stable spindle behavior during industrial machining.
Its power section uses the D45A supply unit, while the command path is handled by an SPC6 card that interprets motion requests from the CNC. Two motor capacity ranges are available: 55/45 kW for demanding roughing cycles and 37/30 kW for standard finishing spindles. Parameter tuning is supported by the load meter trim marked LM, and a separate speed meter trim marked SM is also provided. Communication with the machine control travels over a fiber-optic signal interface, which helps reduce electrical noise inside the cabinet. All regulation logic resides on the VAC Board I-HPW paired with VAC Card 1, and only Type A compatible PCBs can be installed to maintain control compatibility.
Feedback from the spindle encoder returns through connector CN13, allowing the drive to close velocity and position loops without external adapters. The faceplate is finished in dark brown plastic and carries indicator windows that show when the VA1/VR2 diagnostic points are in the required invalid state during startup. Line reactors can be sized by referencing the permissible source impedance; at 200 V the drive accepts up to 115 µH maximum of inductance, while at 220 V it permits 45 µH maximum. Observing these limits helps minimize DC-bus ripple and allows the speed trim circuit to track command changes accurately.
