The OSP5020L is a numerical control monitor unit produced by Okuma and supplied as part of the OSP CNC Monitors series. It serves as the operator interface and processing core for Okuma lathes and machining centers, combining the display, memory, and I/O resources required to execute part programs and coordinate multi-axis motion in an industrial automation cell. Within a machine enclosure, the monitor links the operator panel to the servo drives and turret indexers, allowing real-time editing, diagnostics, and program execution.
At the processing level, the unit is built around a 68000 microprocessor clocked at 15 MHz, providing sufficient throughput for block look-ahead and real-time interpolation. Program storage is handled by a bubble-memory system that can accept up to two cards, expanding nonvolatile capacity to 32 Mbits (4 Mbytes) so large part programs remain available after power loss. Volatile execution memory is divided between the MC11 and MC12 modules. The MC11 board provides 512 Kbytes for system variables, while an MC12 board adds 2 Mbytes for tool offsets, macros, and conversational data. The backplane supports a maximum of three MC11 or MC12 cards, allowing different combinations of cycle-time buffer and user memory.
The monitor section operates from a 220 VAC single-phase supply that is typically connected to the machine’s auxiliary transformer. A 12-inch CRT presents position, alarm, and parameter pages, while eight soft keys beneath the screen provide access to context-sensitive functions. External communication is available through as many as four RS-232C ports, and a supported RS-422 connection accommodates longer cable runs. Two resolver lines, two solenoid lines, and two contact lines are routed through the TCC-A interface card for spindle orientation and chuck confirmation.
