Product Description:

The OSP-500L-G monitor is produced by Okuma within the OSP CNC Monitors series. It combines a graphic display with control electronics to present machining data and receive operator commands on lathes and machining centers. By integrating axis and spindle feedback with tool-path visualization, the unit acts as the visual front end of the numerical control used in automated metal-cutting equipment. Its role is to translate coded part programs into real-time motion and status graphics that the operator can track.

Internally, a Main Board-IIA coordinates with a CRP Board-II and a Timing Control Board II. The screen is a monochrome graphic CRT, so all geometry and alarm information appears in a single hue, minimizing video circuitry while maintaining high contrast. Part programs reside in bubble memory, a non-volatile medium that safeguards data when power is removed. Motion is governed by closed-loop control, so feedback is compared continuously with commands to correct error during each interpolation cycle. Axis encoders deliver absolute position feedback, allowing immediate coordinate awareness at power-on. The electronics are supplied from an AC 200 V feed that matches typical machine-tool mains. Programs are stored or backed up on 2DD tape reels of 1,840 m or on higher-capacity 2HD/2HC reels of 3,770 m, both using the proprietary OSP format file system.

The control logic is distributed across a multiprocessor architecture, separating numerical calculations, graphics, and I/O scanning to keep cycle time predictable. The monitor supervises two linear axes, X and Z, which suits standard turning applications, while spindle speed is verified through a pulse-generator feedback channel. Operators interact through a pendant-type panel that can be positioned along the machine enclosure for ergonomic access. On-screen contrast is refined by pattern, line type, and brightness differentiation, making tool paths, limits, and diagnostics distinct even on the monochrome display.
