The OSP-5000 monitor-controller unit is produced by Okuma within the OSP CNC Monitors series. It combines a CRT screen, dedicated electronics, and panel keys to act as the human-machine interface for numerically controlled lathes and machining centers. When paired with the appropriate drive hardware, the module displays real-time positions, accepts editing commands, and loads part programs, thereby linking plant-floor operators with the underlying control logic.

The memory architecture begins with bubble memory devices rated at 1 Mbit × 4, giving nonvolatile storage for offsets and diagnostics. Program execution uses a word length of 16 bit, so numerical data are handled two bytes at a time. External communications are routed through the MC3 board, which provides serial links for tape readers or remote diagnostics. Visual output appears on a 12 in cathode-ray tube, and the monochrome phosphor is rendered in green for clear contrast. Four operation panels are supported, allowing the display keys and cycle controls to be placed where needed. Working memory starts at 128 Kbytes, and each multiply instruction completes in 3.2 microseconds, which helps keep block-processing times short. IGF graphics programming lets users create contour paths without manual G-code, while an 8 in floppy drive stores and loads part programs.

The keypad section supplies 8 dedicated function keys that call canned cycles or diagnostic screens without nested menus. When optional memory boards are installed, total bubble capacity rises to 16 Mbits, and dynamic storage can expand to 0.5 Mbytes, providing more room for larger part programs and tool libraries. Control logic is executed by a Motorola 68000 microprocessor seated on the MB0 main board, where 32-bit internal registers accelerate address calculations. The board set integrates the IGF interpreter, MC3 links, and DMA channels so the CRT refresh, floppy transfers, and axis position sampling can proceed concurrently without halting foreground machining tasks.
