The PRD-SC30030M-31 is a servo drive produced by Kollmorgen for the SC Servostar Servo Drives series. It converts DC-link power from a motion cabinet into precisely modulated phase currents so that rotary or linear servomotors follow commanded torque, speed, or position profiles within tightly regulated tolerances. In plant automation, this unit mounts alongside PLCs and feedback modules, supplying closed-loop actuation for indexing tables, pick-and-place arms, and other axes that demand a deterministic response.
This model delivers a continuous output of 3 A RMS and can supply up to 9 A RMS for 500 ms to cover acceleration peaks. Pulse-width modulation operates at 16 kHz, while the digital position loop is refreshed every 500 µs; these rates reduce torque ripple and improve following-error control in high-bandwidth applications. Speed error is limited to 0.01%, supporting precise line-speed or spindle regulation. Internally, the drive dissipates 70 W of heat and draws 1.5 A of logic current for encoder power and I/O. A soft-start circuit limits inrush current to 30 A, and the bulk capacitors reach full charge within 0.25 seconds. Regenerative energy is directed to a 200 W shunt that must be paired with a resistor rated at no less than 20 Ω; conduction begins when the bus voltage reaches 390 VDC.
Protective thresholds include an overvoltage trip at 430 VDC, an undervoltage cutoff at 90 VDC, and an overtemperature limit of 80 °C. These protective measures help prevent IGBT failure and thermal runaway when ambient temperatures or load conditions exceed operating limits. The control board supervises shunt current and stops power-stage switching if dissipation exceeds the 200 W rating. Charge management keeps electrical surges within the permitted limits during startup and regenerative braking. Housed in an aluminum chassis that weighs 2.12 kg, the drive can be panel-mounted close to the motor to minimize cable inductance and enclosure space.
