The SERVOSTAR-400-A servo drive is produced by Kollmorgen as part of the S400 Servo Drives series. It regulates torque, velocity, and position of brushless motors in automated machinery, linking motion commands from a PLC to real-time current and voltage delivered to the motor phases. By combining signal conditioning, power electronics, and feedback computation in one 50 mm wide housing, the unit supports compact cabinet layouts for conveyors, pick-and-place axes, and packaging lines. This arrangement lets one compact drive handle command processing, feedback evaluation, and motor power control in the same enclosure.

The analog command input has an impedance of 20 kΩ, which prevents excessive source current. The converter resolves commands in 1.25 mV steps and updates every 62.5 µs, so torque references can follow fast trajectories. PWM current loops switch at 8 kHz, balancing bandwidth and heat generation. Four programmable inputs accept limit or home switches, and two programmable outputs report status. Each output can source 10 mA at 30 V to drive opto-couplers. The housing carries an IP20 rating for finger safety inside control cabinets. An output current form factor of 1.01 keeps RMS and average currents nearly equal, which helps limit motor heating during sustained operation.

The position loop executes every 250 µs, which helps maintain low following error during coordinated moves. Safety relays tied to the BTB/RTO terminals carry up to 0.5 A, allowing the drive to open or close external contactors when a fault is detected. The housing is 230 mm high and 240 mm deep, and installation weight is limited to 1.7 kg. These dimensions leave room for orderly cable routing and front access in densely populated control cabinets.
