The MX2000-6A is a six-axis controller produced by Kollmorgen as part of the MX2000 Motion Controllers series. Designed for coordinated positioning and velocity control, the unit receives motion commands from a host computer and generates pulse and analog outputs to connected drives. In automated assembly cells, material-handling lines, and test stands, it provides deterministic trajectory execution so that multiple axes maintain alignment during complex moves. Its onboard digital signal processor manages interpolation in real time, allowing individual axes to follow complex profiles without external hardware.
At the signal level, the controller samples analog feedback at 1950 samples/s with an effective 12-bit resolution, giving adequate granularity for velocity or tension loops. When an analog command is required, the board sources ±10 VDC @ 5 mA, which is compatible with most servo amplifiers. A 32-bit DSP running at 33 MHz performs trajectory generation and path blending for up to six axes. Incremental encoder inputs are accepted at rates up to 2 MHz, while a secondary channel supplies 5.0 VDC at 100 mA for sensor power. The controller also issues step-and-direction pulses to stepper drives at 1.99 MHz, and it evaluates 16 opto-isolated inputs plus drives eight opto-isolated outputs for limit, home, or user functions.
Control power and communications are kept distinct. External I/O modules receive 24 VDC through the ribbon header, and the board can source 750 mA on this rail. Primary protection comes from a 2 A, 250 VAC fuse beside the terminal strip. Two asynchronous serial ports support setup and data exchange, and the host link tops out at 38400 baud without blocking motion updates. With eight opto-isolated outputs, deterministic scheduling, and these serial links, the controller can trigger alarms and coordinate devices without extra interface cards.
