The MMC-SD-8.0-460 is a standalone smart drive manufactured by Kollmorgen for the MMC Standalone Smart Drives series. It combines a three-phase rectifier, inverter bridge, motion processor, and eight digital inputs in one enclosure, allowing a single-axis machine to run without a separate controller. By converting fixed 460 VAC mains power into regulated, high-bandwidth motor current, the device supports closed-loop speed or position control for servomotors used in packaging lines, pick-and-place stations, and indexing conveyors.
Under continuous duty, the drive can support 8.0 kW of motor shaft power with a sustained phase output of 18.0 A. Acceleration or transient load steps can be handled with a short-term ceiling of 36.0 A, giving the axis extra headroom for rapid starts or shock loads. On the supply side, the converter draws a steady 14.8 A RMS during normal operation, and cabinet components must tolerate a turn-on surge that reaches 27.7 A RMS. Command data sent through the drive’s motion bus is interpreted at 14-bit resolution, so incremental moves can be planned in 1/16384 steps. Eight general-purpose inputs accept 24 V logic for homing sensors, limit switches, or simple sequence triggers, reducing the need for external PLC cards.
Total apparent power demanded from the mains is 11.8 kVA, and the control electronics consume 25 W from the auxiliary 24 VDC supply, leaving ample capacity on common control buses. A bulk capacitor bank of 705 µF smooths the internal DC link and stores electrical energy for changes in motor demand. Once the link rises to 780 VDC, a shunt circuit activates to protect the drive components. The absorber network can dissipate 66 J per event, and normal conversion losses are limited to 204 W, reducing the heat that must be removed from the enclosure. A 0.5 A brake driver supports holding brakes on vertical axes, and the assembled unit weighs 16 lb, making it easier to mount in a control panel.
