Product Description:

The MMC-SD-16.0-460-D is a standalone smart drive produced by Kollmorgen for the MMC Standalone Smart Drives series. Serving as an all-in-one inverter and motion processor, it converts three-phase line power into controlled outputs that run servo and induction motors in packaging lines, palletizers, and other automated stations. By integrating power conversion, regenerative handling, and axis control inside a single enclosure, the unit simplifies panel design and provides the deterministic torque control needed for repeatable industrial positioning and speed regulation.

Its continuous power stage delivers 16.0 kW to the motor while sustaining 25.8 A RMS of phase current. For short bursts, the current loop allows up to 73.0 A peak so machines can accelerate heavy loads without stalling. Feeders see an apparent load of 16.8 kVA, equivalent to 21.1 A RMS on a 460 V three-phase line. During initial energization, the rectifier and bus capacitors can draw a maximum of 39.2 A RMS, so upstream breakers must be selected accordingly. The control electronics operate from a 24 VDC service supply that draws 1.75 A under steady-state conditions and consumes 42 W. This supply experiences a 4 A inrush lasting 10 ms and also supports the field I/O and internal logic.

Bus energy is smoothed by 1230 µF of capacitance, and a shunt switch diverts excess charge to an external resistor when the voltage reaches 780 VDC. The drive can connect to resistor banks with values as low as 22 Ω and dissipate up to 29 kW during regenerative events, helping prevent overvoltage faults. Waste heat inside the housing is 390 W at full load, which must be accommodated by fan-forced cabinet cooling. An internal brake driver supplies 0.5 A to a motor-mounted holding brake. This output supports controlled brake operation when the drive manages stopping and load retention.
