The MMC-SD-12.0-460-D is an intelligent AC drive built by Kollmorgen within the MMC Standalone Smart Drives series. This unit combines power conversion, motion control logic, and network interfaces in a single enclosure so it can operate a matched servo or induction motor without an external controller. In automated cells, packaging lines, or material handling stations, the drive regulates speed, torque, and position commands while monitoring motor feedback and protective limits.

During continuous operation the drive can supply 19.5 A RMS of output current, a rating that defines the thermal loading the power stage can withstand indefinitely at 40 °C cabinet temperature. When the load demands short bursts of acceleration the current can rise briefly to 55.0 A, giving additional torque without exceeding semiconductor limits. The power section is sized for 12.0 kW of continuous mechanical output at a 460 Vac bus, allowing it to run mid-frame motors on conveyors or extruders. Regenerated energy is diverted once the internal DC link reaches 780 VDC, where the shunt transistor fires to protect the capacitors. Under full load the electronics dissipate 300 W as heat, a figure used to calculate cabinet airflow or heat-sink requirements.

The DC link is supported by 820 µF of bus capacitance that smooths voltage ripple and delivers surge current during rapid command changes. From the mains the unit draws a nominal 16.7 A RMS, so branch conductors and protective devices can be sized accordingly, yet installers must accommodate a start-up inrush of 32.2 A RMS when the capacitors first charge. Control electronics and brake circuitry are powered by the isolated 42 W, 1.75 A auxiliary DC input, keeping logic alive during brownouts. Total drive mass is 35 lb, a consideration for panel door mounting and vibration dampening in mobile equipment. The 13.3 kVA apparent power figure rounds out feeder sizing for continuous duty.
