Product Description:

The MMC-SD-0.5-230-D smart drive is produced by Kollmorgen as part of the MMC Standalone Smart Drives series. The unit integrates power electronics, control processing, and feedback handling into one enclosure, providing closed-loop speed and torque regulation for servo and stepper motors in material-handling cells, packaging machines, and indexing stations. By converting 230 VAC mains power into a controlled DC bus and sinusoidal output, it removes the need for discrete drive racks and simplifies cabinet layouts in distributed automation.

It delivers a continuous output power of 500 W to the motor terminals while supplying a continuous motor current of 2.5 A under rated thermal conditions. For rapid acceleration, it can supply up to 7.5 A for short periods, providing threefold overload capability without saturating the bus capacitors. The input bridge supports 1.0 kVA of apparent power, allowing a single-phase 230 VAC source to supply the drive at full load. A bus protection circuit disconnects the converter if the internal voltage rises above 420 VDC, helping prevent component stress during regenerative events. The design also includes a 70 A inrush limiter and a 38 J energy absorber. The current loop refreshes every 125 microseconds to stabilize torque during rapid changes in motor demand.

Typical operation draws 5 A RMS from the mains, while the 24 V auxiliary rail requires only 350 mA for logic and I/O. A bulk capacitor bank with a capacitance of 1410 µF smooths the DC bus so the velocity loop, which updates every 250 microseconds, receives steady voltage during load transients. The resolver or encoder interface accepts signals up to 720 kHz, allowing high-resolution feedback on fast servo axes. At maximum output, the drive dissipates only 22 W, reducing the cooling demand inside the enclosure. Terminal screws accept a tightening torque of 1.17 Nm, supporting secure conductor connections. The 2.23 kg housing can be mounted close to the motor to shorten power and feedback cable runs.
