The MMC-DSA2 is a programmable standalone smart drive manufactured by Kollmorgen within the MMC Standalone Smart Drives series. Designed for small multi-axis machines and compact cells, it combines motion control, I/O processing, and network communication in one enclosure, eliminating the need for a separate PLC. By coordinating closed-loop servo axes and handling local sequence logic, the unit supports positioning, feeding, and light assembly tasks in industrial automation.
The controller uses a 32-bit RISC processor with a numeric coprocessor operating at 64 MHz, allowing it to perform trajectory calculations within deterministic time slots. Motion programs reside in 1.3 MB of application memory, while production data can be buffered in a 256 KB RAM disk without consuming flash write cycles. The controller supports 2 independently tunable closed-loop servo axes that share the processor. Additional storage includes 64 KB of user-variable space and a 2 MB flash disk for system files. Eight general-purpose DC inputs receive signals from connected sensors and control devices. An RS-232/RS-485 port provides serial communication with a host computer, operator interface, or other compatible equipment.
System power is supplied at 24 VDC, providing the operating voltage required by the controller and its field connections. The general-purpose DC inputs register an active state when the signal reaches the 15 VDC input threshold, helping prevent low-voltage signals from being interpreted as valid commands. Each of the seven general-purpose DC outputs can source up to 0.25 A per output, making them suitable for small relays, indicators, and similar loads. Integrated Ethernet supports 100Base-TX/10Base-T half-duplex communication over unshielded twisted-pair cable. Ethernet cable runs can extend up to 50 m for peer-to-peer status exchange or remote access. The user port operates at up to 115.2 Kbaud, and its combined RS-232/RS-485 electrical interface supports communication with legacy terminals while Ethernet handles higher-level network traffic.
