The Digital MMC-D4 is a motion controller manufactured by Kollmorgen for the MMC Standalone Smart Drives series. Mounted near the drive rack, this unit supplies real-time trajectory generation and I/O handling so that industrial machinery can synchronize multiple axes without a separate PLC. It accepts power and status feedback directly from the drives it supervises and serves as the central coordinator in packaging, assembly, and material-handling lines.

At its core, a 32-bit RISC processor with a numeric coprocessor processes position loops and user logic. The processor draws on 256 KB of RAM for variable storage during runtime, while a 2 MB flash disk holds firmware and motion libraries. Dedicated 384 KB of application memory stores compiled programs that execute deterministically during every scan. Motion update cycles occur at 0.5 ms, and the controller can refresh command data for 2 axes at a 0.5 ms update rate, so velocity and position corrections stay tightly coupled to the mechanical load. An additional 64 KB of nonvolatile user memory stores recipes or configuration tables. An onboard BR2032 3 V coin-cell battery preserves system time and retained data when main power is absent.

The Digital MMC-D4 can command 4 drives simultaneously, distributing setpoints over the internal high-speed serial link. Plant networks connect through 100Base-TX/10Base-T half-duplex Ethernet, allowing remote downloads, diagnostics, and peer messaging. Eight general-purpose DC inputs accept sensor signals, and eight DC outputs switch loads; each channel can source up to 0.25 A. The controller draws an input current of 250 mA from the attached drive backplane, eliminating the need for a separate supply. For legacy tools, a 115.2 kbaud PicPro port provides ASCII command access, supporting bench testing and maintenance tasks.
