The Digital MMC-D2 is a controller-integrated drive manufactured by Kollmorgen for the MMC Standalone Smart Drives series. Designed for machine builders who need distributed intelligence, this product merges motion control, drive power, and field wiring into a single DIN-rail module. In an automation cell, it executes trajectory calculations, supervises axis status, and publishes diagnostics so that higher-level PLCs can focus on line coordination. Its small footprint allows placement close to motors, reducing cabinet space and cable length while keeping feedback loops tight.
Core processing is handled by a 32-bit RISC processor with a numeric coprocessor, providing deterministic control cycles well below one millisecond. The drive stores firmware and user files in 2 MB of flash disk storage, while active programs run from 256 KB of RAM. Up to 384 KB is reserved for application code, so sizable motion sequences can execute locally without network delays. Eight general-purpose DC inputs accept signals once the line reaches 15 VDC, and eight outputs can each source up to 0.25 A; the group is presented on a 26-pin high-density D-shell connector. The electronics draw a nominal current of only 250 mA from the 24 V control bus, leaving ample headroom for external sensors. A dedicated PICPRO port uses RS-232 for configuration, and the user port can switch between RS-232 and RS-485 to match plant wiring.
Ethernet communication complies with IEEE 802.3/802.3u and supports cable runs up to 25 m, allowing the module to mount inside a moving enclosure without repeaters. At the fastest servo-loop interval of 0.25 ms, it can coordinate 1 axis, while a 1 ms loop permits control of 2 axes, giving system designers a way to trade bandwidth for channel count. Deterministic packets share the network with PLC traffic through an internal switch, so no separate motion bus is needed.
