Internal Product Review

The Digital MMC-D16 is a Kollmorgen standalone smart drive controller designed for coordinated motion with support for up to 16 servo axes and a 96 MHz processor. 100Base-TX/10Base-T Ethernet and an RS232/RS485 user port make network integration and serial interfacing straightforward in mixed automation architectures. Eight digital inputs and eight digital outputs give the unit strong machine-level flexibility, making the controller a very capable choice for compact multi-axis systems.

Product Description:

The Digital MMC-D16 is an integrated motion controller and drive manufactured by Kollmorgen for the MMC Standalone Smart Drives series. It houses the control processor, amplifier stage, local inputs and outputs, and network interfaces inside one enclosure, so a separate PLC is not required. In an automation cell, it sequences moves, supervises safety interlocks, and communicates status information to supervisory systems, allowing machine builders to coordinate servo axes directly from the drive.

The controller is built around a 32-bit RISC core clocked at 96 MHz, giving it the cycle time needed for interpolated motion and high-speed logic. Working data is buffered in 256 KB of RAM, while application code occupies up to 1.3 MB of application memory. Programs remain resident in a nonvolatile 2 MB flash disk after power is removed. This architecture supports deterministic execution of position loops, mathematical functions, and user-written tasks. Serial diagnostics travel over an RS-232/RS-485 user port that reaches 115.2 kbit/s, allowing software transfers and parameter backups without opening the panel. An input turn-on voltage of 15 VDC allows direct connection to typical sensor rails. Each sourcing output can deliver 0.25 A with a 50 µs turn-on delay for fast pneumatic or relay actuation.

Field-level interaction is provided through 8 digital inputs for sensing switches or probes and 8 digital outputs for driving indicators, coils, or solid-state devices. For cell networking, an onboard interface supports the 100Base-TX/10Base-T Ethernet standard over cable runs up to 25 m, enabling real-time status sharing and web-based configuration. Its motion capacity extends to a maximum of 16 servo axes, allowing the controller to coordinate multiple machine mechanisms from a single program. The network connection supports communication with supervisory equipment, while the serial port provides a separate path for diagnostics and data transfers. Local input and output channels allow sensors and actuators to connect directly to the controller without requiring separate remote interface modules.
