Product Description:

The MCSS-16-6410-004 servo drive is built by Kollmorgen for the MC Servostar Servo Drives series and belongs to the MC ServoStar MC product family. It controls three-phase brushless motors by modulating current in response to motion commands, keeping axes synchronized in automated assembly lines, pick-and-place cells, and other industrial equipment. The unit combines control software, a power stage, and communication interfaces in one housing. This arrangement allows direct connection to compatible motors and higher-level controllers inside a control cabinet while reducing the need for separate control components.

Its communication port supports the deterministic SERCOS interface, allowing drive parameters and real-time setpoints to be exchanged over a fiber-optic connection with typical cycle times below one millisecond. The drive is configured for standalone operation, eliminating the need for an external master board when only a single axis must be regulated. Machine sensors and actuators connect through 23 isolated inputs and 20 isolated outputs, providing local signaling without additional I/O cards. For distributed field devices, the controller provides support for two SST-compatible fieldbuses, allowing additional protocols to connect through gateway modules. An internal backplane includes a PC-104/PC-104+ connector for up to two expansion cards. This connection can accommodate encoder interfaces, additional memory, or analog modules without increasing the enclosure size.

The drive uses a self-contained package in which the heat sink, control board, and power terminals are preassembled for direct panel mounting. Configuration data remains available after power cycles through nonvolatile RAM support, so restart sequences do not require parameters to be entered again. Front-panel adjustments are assisted by eight DIP switches, which can select the node address, baud rate, or diagnostic modes. Status information is presented through five LEDs that show the drive enable state, SERCOS ring condition, and fault codes. These indicators provide visible operating information from the front of the installed unit without requiring access to its internal circuitry.
