The M4450-10020A is a regenerative power unit produced by Kollmorgen for the M4000 Digital DC Drives series. The module converts three-phase utility power into a regulated DC output and feeds regenerated energy back to the line when the driven load decelerates. By providing bidirectional power flow, it supports energy-efficient speed regulation of industrial DC motors used on conveyors, extruders, and unwinders. An isolated RS485 serial port allows supervisory control systems to change parameters and retrieve status without additional gateways.

At full rating, the drive draws an AC line current of 73.0 A and delivers an armature bus of 500 VDC. Under the same conditions, the DC output current can reach 90.0 A, a capacity sized for motors up to 50 HP. Fine reference commands are possible because the analog speed demand circuit resolves increments down to 0.025%. Five opto-isolated digital outputs report fault and sequence states, and a single relay rated 250 VAC at 5 A can be wired to master safety circuits. A 24 VDC terminal supplies 40 mA for external sensors. The power section is 23.375 in high and 11.875 in deep, allowing it to mount in standard cabinets without excessive clearance.

Thermal management is handled by a blower that moves 72 CFM across the heat sink. During continuous operation, the converter dissipates only 257 W, which helps keep cabinet temperatures moderate. The dedicated field regulator can source up to 8 A, letting the application adjust flux for optimum torque at low speed. When paired with a tachometer, the unit holds commanded velocity within 0.1%, reducing product variation in tension-critical processes.
