The M4407-10020A is a regenerative digital DC drive produced by Kollmorgen as part of the M4000 Digital DC Drives series. The unit converts fixed three-phase line power into a variable DC armature supply so that DC motors can accelerate, hold speed, and brake under closed-loop control. Because the power section is regenerative, kinetic energy from deceleration is returned to the supply instead of being lost in external resistors. In applications such as web handling, extruders, and material conveying, the drive functions as the central actuator interface for high-precision speed regulation.
Incoming utility power of 460 VAC across 3 input phases is rectified and processed by the M4407-10020A power section. Under rated loading, the line draws an AC full-load current of 11.3 A, and protection upstream is coordinated with a 40 A line fuse specified for this frame size. The armature circuit is protected separately by a 50 A semiconductor fuse, allowing the drive to deliver up to 7.5 HP of mechanical output while keeping fault energy within limits. Five programmable analog inputs and ten programmable digital inputs allow scaling, run/stop, and trim signals to be wired directly to the control board, while the RS485 serial port supports remote parameter changes.
The controlled output reaches an armature voltage of 500 VDC and a DC full-load current of 13.5 A, with a field regulator that can supply 8 A at 300 VDC for shunt-wound motors. During short overloads, the drive sustains 150% for 1 minute so high-inertia loads can start without stalling. Closed-loop speed commands are executed with a demand resolution of 0.025%, giving fine incremental control when the unit is paired with a tachometer or encoder. Regenerative operation lets excess kinetic energy flow back through the bridge instead of being dissipated as heat, which improves system efficiency and reduces panel thermal load.
