Kollmorgen manufactures the KSM 122A safety module in the KSM Safety Solution Modules series. This unit is installed between motion drives and the primary controller to supervise velocity, position, and field inputs, enabling immediate shutdown of hazardous movement when predefined limits are violated. By providing integrated encoder evaluation and safety logic, the module helps machine builders achieve category-3 and category-4 stop functions without adding a separate safety PLC.

The KSM 122A supervises 2 axes at once and compares their speed and direction against parameterized thresholds. A bank of 12 safe digital inputs accepts light curtain, e-stop, or guard switch contacts, while 2 safe analog inputs can read pressure or position transducers for limit checking. Standard field devices drive these inputs with signals rated 24 VDC at 20 mA, avoiding special wiring. Encoder signals arriving through the terminal HTL channel are processed up to 10 kHz, and separate SSI, SIN/COS, or TTL interfaces on the front panel support feedback monitoring at higher frequencies. Eight OSSD-compatible inputs allow daisy-chained downstream sensors, and the module reports diagnostic status through LED indicators and fieldbus telegrams.

The enclosure measures 100 × 115 × 45 mm and weighs 310 g, so it can mount on DIN rail inside compact cabinets. Continuous internal demand is only 2.4 W, minimizing heat rise in sealed panels. With a protection rating of IP52, the housing resists dust ingress and dripping water when mounted vertically. The design attains Performance Level PL e and a Safety Integrity Level of SIL 3, permitting use in applications where uncontrolled motion would present a high risk to personnel. Combined with the SSI and SIN/COS bandwidth of 200 kHz, the module supports stringent safety response times in fast-moving packaging, printing, and material-handling equipment.
