Product Description:
The KSM 122-2 is a safety solution module produced by Kollmorgen within the KSM Safety Solution Modules series. It is intended to supervise motion in multi-axis machinery and to generate safe shutdown signals when velocity, position, or stop conditions violate programmed limits. By combining encoder evaluation, field-side safety inputs, and fail-safe outputs, the device simplifies the integration of functional safety into packaging lines, material-handling gantries, and other automated equipment that must satisfy performance level or SIL requirements.
This model supervises up to 2 axes and is powered from a 24 VDC supply that can deliver 2 A to its internal electronics and output stages. Each of the 12 configurable safety inputs is rated for 24 VDC; 20 mA, allowing direct connection of e-stop buttons or light-curtain contacts without intermediate relays. Overall dimensions of 100 × 115 × 90 mm support DIN-rail mounting inside shallow control enclosures, while a mass of 470 g minimizes panel loading. The unit provides 8 dedicated OSSD safety outputs for hard-wired drive enable or contactor control. Power demand is limited to 2.4 W, so the module adds little thermal load. Two encoder channels are available on clamp-type terminal strips, and four additional encoder links are accessible on a front D-SUB 9-pole connector, giving flexibility for incremental, SSI, or TTL feedback routing.
The device processes HTL encoder signals up to 10 kHz and incremental formats as high as 200 kHz, preserving fault-tolerant speed calculation even on high-rpm axes. A bank of 12 secure digital inputs can be assigned to safety functions such as muting, door monitoring, or two-hand control. Protection category IP 52 shields the electronics from dust ingress and dripping water, enabling installation in standard electrical cabinets without additional sealing. Terminal encoder interfaces, SSI master commands at 150 kHz, and clamp-type field wiring allow direct connection to Kollmorgen servo drives and third-party motion controllers.
