Product Description:

The KSM 122 is a compact safety solution module manufactured by Kollmorgen as part of the KSM Safety Solution Modules series. The device is installed between a motion controller and servo drives to monitor speed, position, and stop functions. By processing encoder data internally, it can trigger safe shutdowns quickly and support functional safety compliance in coordinated machine applications.

The safety inputs are rated at 24 VDC and draw 20 mA per channel, conforming to Type 1 signaling for field devices. A total of 12 safe digital inputs, eight of which are OSSD pairs, allow direct connection of light curtains, e-stops, and other presence sensors. The module supervises 2 motion axes and consumes only 2.4 W, so the thermal load inside a control cabinet remains low. Wiring enters through pluggable terminals that accept conductors up to 1.5 mm², which simplifies removal when the unit must be disconnected. The enclosure carries an ingress rating of IP52, so dust and vertically falling water drops cannot reach the electronics. Overall dimensions of 100 × 115 × 45 mm let the device fit on a standard DIN rail between drives, and its slim width minimizes panel space.

Two independent encoder paths are available on the front panel through a 9-pin D-sub connector. The inputs accept incremental TTL, SIN/COS, or SSI signals and can track edge frequencies up to 200 kHz without losing counts. For HTL feedback wired to the pluggable terminal strip, the permissible rate is 10 kHz, and the terminals also support two Proxi-Switch or incremental HTL channels. When the module operates as an SSI master, it clocks outgoing queries at 150 kHz, while slave devices can be followed at up to 250 kHz. With the front interfaces isolated from the terminal channels, the connected encoder channels can be evaluated simultaneously. Despite this feature set, the unit weighs only 310 g, so it imposes minimal stress on light DIN-rail assemblies.
