The KSM 12-2 safety module is produced by Kollmorgen as part of the KSM Safety Solution Modules series. Designed for machine control systems, the unit supervises motion feedback and discrete safety signals so that drives and actuators can be stopped or held in a safe operating state. By combining programmable logic with built-in relay outputs, it serves as a core component for functional safety in compact machines and multi-axis cells. This arrangement allows one module to manage coordinated shutdown logic across several machine functions without requiring a separate safety relay for every signal path.

It monitors 2 axes, allowing simultaneous evaluation of speed and position on two independent motion channels. Connection of incremental and absolute feedback is supported through 8 encoder interfaces, which helps the module accommodate mixed feedback types in the same installation. The module receives its primary power from a 24 VDC supply, and each digital input draws 20 mA to keep the control-side load modest. A total of 14 safe digital inputs accepts signals from e-stop devices, light curtains, and guard switches without external expansion. Functional safety is certified to PL e, and two solid-state safe digital outputs can transmit status to drives while two form-C relay outputs can interrupt external power. This combination lets the module handle both signal-level safety communication and direct switching tasks within the same cabinet section.

Diagnostic performance is supported by long service-life values that reduce the need for frequent proof activities during normal use. Overall safety architecture reaches 12.6 FIT / Cat 4, and the module is independently assessed to SIL 3 under IEC 61508 for high-integrity safety operation. Up to two expansion devices can be added on the right-hand bus, which allows the control system to grow without taking much more rail space. The enclosure measures 100 x 115 x 112.5 mm and weighs 520 g, making DIN-rail mounting practical inside standard electrical cabinets. Its compact housing also helps fit the module beside drives, power supplies, and terminal blocks in tightly arranged panels.
