Product Description:
The KSM 100-4-EC is a safety controller module produced by Kollmorgen for integration into the KSM Safety Solution Modules series. It serves as a programmable safety layer between field devices and motion drives, executing emergency stop, enable, and speed-monitoring tasks within industrial machinery. By consolidating certified logic and I/O in one unit, the module allows OEMs to meet high functional safety targets without adding separate relays or external safety PLCs. Its compact form factor lets it mount directly beside servo amplifiers, reducing cabinet wiring length.
The module draws control power from a 24 VDC rail and exchanges safety data across the network at 100 Mbit/s. Its single port follows the EtherCAT protocol, so deterministic updates can pass through standard automation topology without converters. Internally, dual microprocessors and cross-monitoring paths satisfy SIL 3, while validated diagnostic coverage supports a PL e performance category. Fourteen safe digital inputs, two safe transistor outputs, one floating relay contact, and two pulse outputs are scanned every cycle; each input adheres to Type 1 signaling and sinks 20 mA when activated, ensuring reliable edge detection even with long sensor cables.
Inside its IP52 enclosure, the KSM 100-4-EC supports a total of 40 mapped safe digital I/O channels that can be assigned to application-specific logic blocks. Aggregate processing, watchdogs, and status LEDs require no more than 3.2 W, minimizing thermal load on crowded panels. Each solid-state safety output is rated for 250 mA, allowing direct control of contactor coils, indicator lamps, or low-power actuators. The built-in relay path supports higher current circuits when galvanic isolation is necessary, so machine builders can route shutdown chains without adding external relays.
