The KSM 100-4-CN module is part of the KSM Safety Solution Modules series manufactured by Kollmorgen. It is a configurable safety controller intended to monitor emergency stops, light curtains, muting sensors, and other protective devices in industrial automation cells. By evaluating redundant inputs and driving designated outputs, the unit serves as the logic layer that removes power from actuators or brings axes to a safe state whenever a detected fault or demand occurs. Its compact housing allows installation inside machine panels with limited depth.

All internal electronics are supplied from 24 VDC, so integration into standard safety-rated power buses is direct. Even with all diagnostics activated, overall dissipation is only 3.2 W, helping keep enclosure temperatures low. Each digital input channel sinks a steady 20 mA, which guarantees reliable recognition of OSSD signals while keeping wiring resistance effects small. The solid-state outputs can source up to 250 mA per point, permitting direct actuation of contactors or indicator lamps without interposing relays. For networked systems, the built-in CANopen fieldbus exchanges status words and configuration parameters with motion drives or higher-level PLCs, enabling centralized diagnostics and parameter storage while eliminating discrete wiring.

Functional safety coverage is established by the architecture reaching SIL 3 according to IEC 61508 and the complementary machinery standard performance level PLe. The polycarbonate enclosure carries an IP52 rating, so it resists particulate ingress and dripping water when mounted in a protected cabinet. Up to 40 safe digital I/O points can be mapped inside one controller, including dedicated sets of 8 OSSD sources, 10 status signal outputs, and the single force-guided relay output. This mix supports guard doors, two-hand controls, or speed monitors while keeping wiring runs short and diagnostics concentrated in one location.
