The KSM 100-2-PN safety solution module is produced by Kollmorgen as part of the KSM Safety Solution Modules series. It serves as the central safety controller within automated machinery, supervising emergency stops, guard interlocks, and speed-related functions through integrated logic and Profinet communication. By combining safe inputs, safe outputs, and fieldbus networking in one housing, the device helps machine builders meet demanding risk-reduction goals without relying on separate hard-wired relay schemes.
The unit operates from a nominal supply of 24 VDC/2 A, and its electronics draw no more than 3.2 W maximum, which helps limit panel heat rise. Fourteen digital input channels accept 24 VDC at 20 mA, while two solid-state outputs switch 24 VDC at 250 mA. Together with additional monitoring lines, these connections provide 20 safe digital I/O points and two pulse outputs for encoder or muting tasks. Deterministic traffic to the main PLC passes over Profinet at 100 Mbit/s full-duplex. An enclosure rated IP52 shields the circuitry against dust and dripping water, and the safety architecture attains PL e under ISO 13849-1. Physical dimensions of 100 × 115 × 135 mm allow straightforward DIN-rail mounting, and one mechanically latched relay output provides a galvanically isolated disconnect path.
Functionally, the controller meets SIL 3 per IEC 61508, enabling its use on presses, robot cells, and palletizers that demand high-integrity stop functions. Of the twenty safe channels, 14 are dedicated inputs for devices such as light curtains, and 2 are semiconductor outputs used for drive enable or valve actuation. System capacity can be expanded with up to 6 additional KSM extension modules when a larger machine requires more connected safety devices.
