The KSM 100-2-CN is a safety controller module produced by Kollmorgen for the KSM Safety Solution Modules series. Within an automation cell, it monitors sensors, checks logic conditions, and actuates safe outputs so that machinery meets functional safety targets. By hosting user-programmable safety functions on dedicated hardware, the module replaces discrete relays and simplifies integration with servo drives, conveyors, and robotic axes.

The unit operates from a regulated supply of 24 VDC / 2 A, drawing no more than 3.2 W under full program load. Safety messages reach the higher-level bus through a CANopen Safety link running at 500 kbit/s. Fourteen inputs accept switching signals at 24 VDC and 20 mA, while two semiconductor outputs switch field devices at 24 VDC and 250 mA. An additional pair of fail-safe outputs supports dual-channel shutdown paths. The controller carries the SIL 3 rating, permitting use in applications where single-fault tolerance is mandatory. For command distribution, it provides two dedicated safe digital outputs and accounts for them within the total of 20 available safe I/O points.

Physical integration is straightforward because the housing measures 100 × 115 × 135 mm. System capacity can be expanded by adding up to 6 extension modules that mount on the right-hand side without extra wiring. The module withstands airborne dust yet permits convective cooling, as shown by the IP52 protection rating. Functional safety calculations list a probability of dangerous failure of 6.0 × 10^-9 per hour within a Class 4 architecture, and the performance level of PL e confirms compliance with EN ISO 13849. All twenty safe digital I/O channels, including one force-guided relay output, are verified during startup self-tests, and scheduled proof testing is limited to a 20-year interval.
