Kollmorgen's KSM 100-1-PN safety controller module is part of the KSM Safety Solution Modules series. The unit monitors field devices and transfers status data to PLCs over an Ethernet link. Inside a machine, it synchronizes emergency stops, interlock switches, and light curtains so motion axes reach a safe state. The -1-PN designation suits installations that need distributed functional safety in limited cabinet space.
The module operates from a nominal 24 VDC / 2 A supply and draws up to 3.2 W max, allowing installation on common control cabinet power buses. Communication with standard I/O and drives is handled through a PROFINET port that supports 100 MBit/s Full-Duplex traffic, ensuring deterministic transfer of safety telegrams. Fourteen safe digital inputs rated at 24 VDC, 20 mA, Type 1 accommodate contact sensors, and eight of these channels accept OSSD signals. Two safe digital outputs deliver 24 VDC at 250 mA, while one safe relay output and two pulse test outputs provide redundant feedback paths. A separate relay contact can switch 24 VDC at 2 A or 230 VAC at 2 A for conventional loads. The controller achieves PL e performance and meets SIL 3 requirements for machinery where a failure to stop could cause serious harm.
Functional reliability is quantified by a probability of dangerous failure per hour of 6.0 × 10⁻⁹, supporting long service intervals in safety-critical environments. An enclosure rating of IP52 protects internal circuits against limited dust ingress and dripping water when mounted in a panel. Up to 6 expansion modules can be attached on the right side, allowing additional analog safety inputs or fieldbus gateways without recertification of the base unit. The compact 100 × 115 × 90 mm footprint leaves space for other devices on the DIN rail and simplifies heat dissipation inside the cabinet.
