The DSM120 digital servo drive is manufactured by Kollmorgen as part of the DSA SERCOS Drives series. It converts a fixed DC bus into controlled three-phase outputs, allowing an automation controller to position and regulate servo motors over the SERCOS network. Within an industrial cell, the unit supplies the commanded current, monitors feedback, and dissipates regenerated energy so axes can accelerate, decelerate, and hold loads precisely.
The drive can draw a continuous input of 19 A from the DC link and deliver a sustained phase current of 10 A to the motor, supporting a continuous mechanical output of 2.0 kW. For rapid moves, the current stage reaches a peak of 20 A without saturation, while the velocity loop maintains regulation up to 400 Hz for tight speed control. Internal losses at full current amount to 100 W, and the integrated shunt can dissipate 50 W of regenerative power. Additional terminals accept an external resistor rated for 2.4 kW of continuous power and 6.0 kW of peak power, while a 4.5 kW internal limit protects the transistor. These provisions allow the module to handle high-inertia loads without causing overvoltage.
The DC link uses a bulk capacitance of 1950 µF, giving the unit the ability to absorb up to 69 J of energy from sudden deceleration events before the shunt circuit engages. Current regulation responds within a -3 dB bandwidth of 1.2 kHz, so torque commands are tracked quickly. For position capture, an auxiliary encoder channel accepts signals at up to 4 MHz. Incremental step-and-direction inputs are accepted at frequencies up to 1 MHz, enabling the drive to follow high-speed pulse trains from discrete motion controllers. All functions are housed in a chassis that weighs 6.36 kg, which supports efficient cabinet placement without compromising thermal performance.
