The DS120 is an AC servo amplifier drive produced by Kollmorgen within the DSA SERCOS Drives series. As a single-axis controller, the unit regulates current and voltage delivered to matched servo motors while receiving deterministic motion commands across the SERCOS interface. In automated cells, the drive turns line power into a controlled DC bus and modulated phase outputs, allowing precise speed and torque regulation for indexing tables, packaging machinery, and material-handling actuators.
At the heart of the converter is a built-in shunt regulator able to dissipate 50 W continuously, and this resistor bleeds surplus bus energy during light loads. For rapid deceleration events, it can absorb spikes up to 4.5 kW for short periods, preventing overvoltage trips. The DC link storage equals 1950 µF, a capacitance that smooths rectified mains and supplies surge current to the inverter section. When the capacitors charge, they can store up to 69 J of energy, which is useful when calculating braking profiles and external discharge requirements. Supply wiring must accommodate a continuous draw of 19 A, which is the maximum input current specified for steady operation on a single-phase mains line.
On the load side, the DS120 can deliver 10 A of RMS motor current without derating, translating to a mechanical shaft output of 2.0 kW at 240 Vrms under continuous duty. For quick acceleration or to clear stiction, the current can rise to 20 A peak, and the corresponding peak power capability reaches 5.0 kW for a few seconds. If regenerative energy from the motor still exceeds the internal shunt limit, an external resistor bank rated to 6.0 kW can be connected, with activation occurring once the bus reaches the 425 VDC turn-on threshold. These values support drive sizing, cable selection, and thermal planning for the application.
